Concession fares - Seniors and Pensioners

Seniors Card holders and Pensioners can go further by train and coach, for less. Use your entitlement and travel with NSW TrainLink to great events and attractions, or to connect with your family and friends.

Subsidised or concession travel is available to Australian seniors and pensioners. For first time users, please register your concession card before you make a booking. You can now register your concession card by phone for future bookings on 13 22 32.

All Australian residents over 60 from any state or territory who work less than 20 hours per week who hold a seniors card are entitled to:

  • unlimited $2.50 Country Pensioner Excursion tickets
  • 50% off ordinary adult peak season Economy and First Class fares
Pensioner concession card

Pensioners

NSW or ACT residents who hold a Centrelink or Veterans' Affairs card are entitled to:

  • four one-way Pensioner Travel Vouchers each calendar year, then 50% off ordinary adult peak season Economy and First Class fares (Victorian Pensioner Concession card holders may use Pensioner Travel Vouchers for travel in Victoria only)
  • unlimited $2.50 Country Pensioner Excursion tickets

All Centrelink or Veterans' Affairs card holders are entitled to:

  • 50% off ordinary adult peak season Economy and First Class fares
War widows and widowers

War widows and widowers

NSW, Victorian or ACT residents who hold a War Widow/er transport concession card are entitled to:

  • four one-way Pensioner Travel Vouchers each calendar year, then 50% off ordinary adult peak season Economy and First Class fares
  • unlimited $2.50 Country Pensioner Excursion tickets

Seniors

Free and discounted NSW TrainLink travel on Regional trains and coaches

If you hold either of these cards:

  • NSW or ACT Pensioner Concession Card
  • NSW War Widow/er transport concession card

you are entitled to four free one-way Pensioner Travel Vouchers each calendar year for trips to Regional NSW and beyond. Victorian Pensioner Concession Card holders may use Pensioner Travel Vouchers for travel in Victoria only.

Your concession

  • If you travel in Economy, your voucher fully covers your fare.
  • If you travel in First Class, you only pay 15% of the full adult peak season fare (minimum $10).
  • If your trip takes you over the NSW border, you pay half the interstate portion of either the Economy or First Class fare.
  • You can catch a Sydney Trains or NSW TrainLink Intercity service to get to or from your NSW TrainLink Regional service at no extra charge as long as you book it with your NSW TrainLink Regional service.

You need to present your concession card when you book and collect your ticket. Please remember to carry the same concession card when you travel as onboard crew will need to check it.

If you are unable to collect your own ticket, you can ask a partner, friend or relative to collect your ticket for you. They will need to show identification such as their driver's licence, as well as your pensioner concession card. You will also need to give them a letter of authority including:

  • your date of travel
  • your name
  • your address
  • your pensioner concession card number
  • the name and address of the person collecting the ticket
  • both of your signatures
  • your reservation number (if applicable)

How to work out Economy and First Class fares in NSW

Economy from Sydney to Broken Hill

  • The usual Economy adult fare would be $138.34.
  • With a one-way Pensioner Travel Voucher, you have nothing to pay.
  • Your total Economy fare will be $0.

First Class from Sydney to Broken Hill

  • The usual First Class adult fare would be $192.52.
  • With a one-way Pensioner Travel Voucher, you pay 15% of the full adult peak season fare (for this trip, that's 15% of $192.52).
  • Your total First Class fare will be just $28.88.

How to work out Economy and First Class fares interstate

Economy from Sydney to Brisbane

  • The usual Economy adult fare would be $130.26.
  • With a one-way Pensioner Travel Voucher, you have nothing to pay for the portion of your journey within NSW. However, you pay 50% of the Queensland portion of your journey (for this trip, that's 50% of $33.44).
  • Your total Economy fare will be $16.72.

First Class from Sydney to Brisbane

  • The usual First Class adult fare would be $183.29.
  • With a one-way Pensioner Travel Voucher, you pay 15% of the full First Class adult peak season fare for the NSW portion of your journey (for this trip, that's 15% of $161.39).
  • Your total First Class fare will be just $47.27.

How to work out sleeping berth fares

Sleeping berths are only available if you travel First Class, and there is an additional sleeping berth charge.

Sleeping berth from Sydney to Melbourne

  • The usual sleeping berth adult fare would be $271.29.
  • With a one-way Pensioner Travel Voucher, you pay a booking fee of 15% of the full First Class adult peak season fare for the NSW portion of your journey for this trip, that's 15% of $141.79, or $21.27) plus 50% of the Victoria portion of your journey (for this trip, that's 50% of $89.91, or $44.96) plus an additional sleeping berth charge of $88.00.
  • Your total sleeping berth fare will be $21.27 + $44.96 + $88.00 = $154.23.

What happens when you have used all your vouchers?

NSW TrainLink keeps track of your Pensioner Travel Vouchers. When all four have been used, show your Centrelink pensioner concession card or your government-issued Seniors Card for a 50% concession on the full adult peak season fare.

You can call 13 22 32 whenever you want to check how many Pensioner Travel Vouchers you have left.


Country Pensioner Excursion tickets

$2.50 one-way Regional trips within NSW

If you hold one of these cards:

  • NSW, Victorian or ACT Pensioner Concession Card
  • NSW, Victorian or ACT War Widow/er transport concession card
  • Seniors Card

You are entitled to book one-way Economy trips to Regional NSW and the ACT for just $2.50.

Your concession

  • Your fare will be $2.50 for a one-way Economy trip to any Regional destination in NSW or the ACT (but not interstate or Intercity destinations).
  • You need to book your ticket in advance, 7 days or less before you travel. If you catch a train or coach without booking in advance, you will be charged $2.50 for each trip you take.
  • You can make several stops and continue to travel on the same ticket, providing you don't stop over for more than 12 hours and you complete your journey on the date shown on your ticket (unless the train or coach you are travelling on is scheduled to arrive the day after the date on your ticket).
  • You can also use the same Country Pensioner Excursion ticket for a return trip if you begin your return journey within 12 hours of arriving at your destination. Return must be booked at time of booking forward journey.

Ticket restrictions

Country Pensioner Excursion Ticket boundaries mapCountry Pensioner Excursion cannot be used for interstate travel to Victoria or Queensland. They also cannot be used for travel to or through metropolitan areas serviced by Sydney Trains or NSW TrainLink Intercity trains, such as Sydney, Wollongong or Newcastle or the Blue Mountains, including:

  • Moss Vale on Southern Region services
  • Lithgow on Western Region services
  • Muswellbrook on North Western Region services
  • Dungog on North Coast Region train services
  • south of Karuah and Booral on North Coast Region coach services

If you wish to travel into the areas listed above you will need to buy a half-fare Pensioner Concession Ticket or use a Pensioner Travel Voucher.

You need to provide your concession card number when booking and collecting your ticket. Please remember to take the same concession card with you when you travel as our onboard staff will need to check it.


Half-price fares

50% concessions on NSW TrainLink Regional services

If you hold one of these cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession
  • Seniors Card

You are entitled to 50% off ordinary adult peak season fares on all NSW TrainLink Regional services at all times.

Overseas seniors card holders are not entitled to concessions on NSW TrainLink services.


How to book, pay for and collect your ticket

You can book or pay for your ticket online, over the phone or in person. However, before you book your first ticket online or over the phone, you need to register your Pensioner Concession Card or War Widow/er Transport Concession over the phone on 13 22 32.

  • Book and pay at nswtrainlink.info. Select 'concession' when booking online, and print your ticket.
  • Call 13 22 32 to book, and pay with your credit card. You can choose to have your ticket either emailed or posted to you.
  • Call 13 22 32 to book, and arrange to collect your ticket in person from your nearest Station or Sales Agent,* where you can pay in cash, via EFTPOS, or with your credit card. Some stations may not be able to accept EFTPOS or credit card payments.
  • Call 13 22 32 to book, and arrange to pay for your ticket in cash or via EFTPOS at your local post office. You will need to book your trip at least seven business days in advance to allow time for your ticket to be posted to you.
  • Country Pensioner Excursion tickets are not available at Central Station.
